Non-printing setting is not anymore just on object level in InDesign. With Layer Groups plug-in you can set the non-printing attribute to entire layer the way you are used to in other applications.

Layer Groups can also turn separate layers in linked or embedded documents on and off, and these states can be recorded in to a Layer Comp. One of the possible use cases would be to use a single file for both color and B&W output in the document and toggle the adjustmen layers for the conversion from within InDesign.
